Davido Helped Me Find My Sound – Tekno Reveals

Billboard Magazine: Davido Helped Me Find My Sound - Tekno
Tekno, has landed an international  feature in Billilboard Magazine. The magazine published an article which talked his rise to fame, getting the attention of Columbia Records among many other things.
Billboard not only profiled the multi-talented singer, they also made it known he is set to break into the American market.
On the successful ‘Pana’ track, Billboard said:

Dear Kiss Daniel, It Is Time To Wake Up From Your Slumber!

On several occasions, artistes take for granted the consequence of drought and hiatus in the Nigerian music scene. Sadly for us, today, boi-kiss is one of those who have made that list.
I don’t think any other artist enjoyed a more fulfilling year (asides Wizkid) than G-Worldwide’s Kiss Daniel did in 2016.
It was like a flip of page or should I say coin for the afro pop singer who went from being shunned for one of the most dramatic award categories in Nigeria to bagging home the hip-hop world revelation award and best pop album of the year plus other awards.

To All Upcoming Artistes: Let’s Talk Music Promotion, Things You Should Know If You Want Limelight – By Wale Applause

The primary reason for doing music is for the money and the eventual fame that comes with it, although after a couple singles, artistes go for interview and say they do music for the passion.
Maybe passion is the ignition, but money and fame is the fuel. That being said, the essence of making music is the direct conversion to fame and money. For music to convert to fame and money, one major key is PROMOTIONS.
There isn’t any hard and fast rule to music promotions, often times what works for artiste A might not work for artiste B, but some things are just essentials.

You might not notice, but we Nigerians treat musicians like dirt

State Of The MusicYou might not notice, but we Nigerians treat musicians like dirt

We attack Simi's fashion, ignore Davido's struggles, trash D'banj's hustle to make music; our musicians are treated as trash.
Banky W
When you study music on a daily basis to try to make a living out of loving the art and telling the stories around and about it, you are bound to experience more than the average guy that just likes to listen to the new Davido song.
That’s what has happened to me. This job provides an escape from the realities of existing in Nigeria, while also serving as my work, and it has made me appreciate the art. Telling stories about the music means you have to regularly be involved with the people who make it.
As fans, we love the music and value it. And that’s why it is so important to us. But over time, circumstances have come together to make us become hateful towards the people who make the art, and all their troubles. We are unforgiving of them, attack them at their fallible moments, and place them on pedestals where they are bound to fail. Our love for the art, has led us to despise the creators of it.
You might begin to tell yourself, that my line of thought is trash. I understand. I even thought it was trash at first. And even as I write this, I have Davido’s ‘If’ playing in my head and telling me it is still trash. Is it not because we treat them nicely, that’s why they are they make a lot of money, live large, and rub our noses in it on social media? Aren’t they all jerks with just a mic and some talent that are fleecing us of our hard earned cash?
But it is true. We do hate our musicians, and treat them like trash.
Omawumi
You could see it in the comments on Instagram. We ignored the struggle of Davido with being a new father, and trashed his struggle to make good music in 2016. We attack 2face Idibia for not protesting for social justice, while also failing to factor in the numerous forces at play in the country.
We lowkey hate on our Yemi Alade’s music, while openly declaring that she should never have attained that level of success. And then there’s Mr Eazi, whose success has threatened our collective, unfounded sense superiority over Ghanaians. We also berate Simi’s simple tastes in fashion, and use it as an excuse to attack her flawless art.
Why? Why are we like this?
Many musicians are right when they call out haters. They do have haters. And when you go deeper, it all boils down to jealousy. We Nigerians who have 9-5 or have less exciting lives wish deep down to have the life of a musician. We believe that put in minimum work to get to the level that they currently are, enjoying more money and adoration from people than all of the other ‘meaningful’ occupations. Doctors, lawyers, bankers, firefighters and others are seen to be below the musician in the social hierarchy of value.
But it’s not true. The reality of being a musician in Nigeria is depressing and hard, and if everything is made public to you, I bet you would choose to hold on to your regular job. Being a musician in Nigeria is extremely difficult, and when they become popular, the job gets harder.
Popular artists lose their basic human freedoms, as the fame puts enough pressure on them to commoditize their entire life, and sell it for profit. Their work goes beyond the music, and into the realm of monetizing the brand.
They are constantly asked by the media and fans, to justify their existence and the music that they make. And then there’s the media, who most likely are scavengers, looking for the dirty by-product of celebrity lifestyle, and bringing it to light.
This pressure society puts on them can make a man go mad, lose their mind, and look for extraordinary means of escapes. They are on a rollercoaster that is essential for their survival, while also debilitating to their mental state and health.
Burna Boy
They are treated like shit by everyone, and although the monetary reward is fulfilling, it comes at over intangible costs, which can never fully be documented.
A solution to this is to throw more light on what happens behind the scenes, and bring to the public, how much it costs to be a star.
Perhaps, only then would we totally understand the true plight of artists and respect them for sticking to the art against all odds.

Here are Nigeria's most lovable pop music villains

Wizkid, Davido, Burna BoyHere are Nigeria's most lovable pop music villains

Lovers of Music looks through the list of villains that we have had in Nigeria, and why they have been so lovable.
Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido are Nigeria's most lovable villains.
Every Nigerian generation needs a villain. A scapegoat to point the finger at and call all sorts of names. A bad person to blame all the bad music and bad influence of the youths on.
In the ’80s it was Fela and his “protest” music, weed and womanising revolution. The ’00s briefly belonged to 2face Idibia, whose babymama drama was the toast of town and inspired both love and vitriol. And in 2016, well, who is our 2016 villain?
We have morphed into a music industry where everyone needs to be liked to sell out shows and make money from brands. Many artistes who are maverick on the inside, are unable to express themselves properly because of how it hurts their brands, and ultimately affects their power to generate income.
But we need a villain to hate. Nigeria needs to point fingers and say ‘That’s one big bad dude’. We need someone to love to hate.
In the past Nigeria has been blessed (yes, villains are a blessing to spice up the industry) with a good number of these characters. But we have come short.
Terry G
Terry G with his bodyguards
We can try to point to the moment where everything changed in Nigerian music – for worse, but the marker for what ruined us, and gave us a taste of nonsense, is Terry G’s mega hit song, ‘Free madness’.
Nigeria went wild. We embraced the singer, and his senseless music. This was an acquired taste. We had seen a song that required no level of intelligence to understand, and we jumped for it. The scales were tipped in favour of that tempo, the radios gave it numerous spins, videos were rotated on air, and like all trends, and the music makers jumped on that bandwagon.
It isn’t Terry’s music that has made him out to join this elite list of transgressors. It’s his eccentric quality. Terry G’s branding has him looking like a villain with no actual dastardly credentials. But he earned some good villainy points when he attacked DJ Jimmy Jatt’s protégé at a concert earlier this year. Not enough, but he sure got into the books.
Timaya

The Port Harcourt-bred artiste who is regarded as one of Nigeria’s underrated consistent hit makers hasn’t always been all fashionable outfits and dancehall. Once upon a time, he had more similarities with Terry G, than Darey Art Alade. Spotting dreadlocks and a menacing demeanour, he pranced around the country giving off good music, spiced with a bit of threats.
But it all came together in one incident in 2009, which still lingers as one of his worst career lows. Timaya is darkly famous for attempting to forcibly collect the keys to an SUV he bought for his ex-lover, actress Empress Njamah, at a church in FESTAC - Praise Resurrection Ministries aka Jehovah Sharp Sharp church. Timaya, had a rough  taste of love turned sour, when he was manhandled, handcuffed and subsequently detained by the FESTAC police for conducting himself in a manner likely to breach public peace.
Over the years Timaya had ‘sold out’, dropped his villainy, and now preaches peace and all things fly.
Wizkid
 From Ojuelegba to the world
Wizkid is the closest we have to an industry villain right now. The star singer is currently famous as the biggest act on the African continent, and in 2016, he is pushing the music to other markets, with the aim of truly crossing over.
But back home, he has long history of doing whatever the hell he wants and to whomever he chooses to. Wizkid hardly ever goes in search of trouble, publicly. He only reacts faster and bigger than his aggressors. He owned Linda Ikeji during their beef, physically assaulted Dammy Krane, played nice when Skales stepped to him, but held his own in a cold, and silent war with Davido.
He did all of these while dropping numerous hit songs and raising his profile on the continent. How ingenuous.
 Davido
Davido
Wizkid’s arch-rival, Davido’s very existence is tied with villainy, although of a very good-natured brand. How many times has there been muffled reports of a beef with his cousins B-Red and Sina Rambo? Countless.
Davido in 2016 humorously wore the toga against Dele Momodu, infusing him into two different songs, and stepping up to his baby Mama with a well-crafted response to every accusation.
When he signed up new acts to his record label, he attacked B-Red for voicing his dissent. As a response to Facts Only With Osagie Alonge, he was very robust on Twitter, and took shots at just about everyone.
Davido loves to fight back, and he does it very well. That’s villain material, 90 yards.
Burna Boy
Burna Boy on UK absence, Afro-fusion genre, and stage name inspiration
If anyone deserves to be the lead villain of Nigerian pop culture, then Burna Boy is a shoo-in for the position. Trouble and Burna Boy are one, and they go everywhere together.
Burna’s list of controversy is as long as any paper on which it is written on, taking the front seat sometimes and overshadowing his music. He has been accused of disowning a pregnancy, assault, clashes with producers, threatening to kill bloggers and many more. He even sacked his mother once upon a time.
All villains need to fire their mother at some point in their lives. Period. Burna Boy has done it, and he sits at the top of the list.

Singer is planning something big, but we are refusing to get excited

WizkidSinger is planning something big, but we are refusing to get excited

On Saturday, April 1, 2017, Wizkid expects the world to expect a new project. We refuse to be excited.
Wizkid
Fool me one time, shame on me, fool me twice, and the blame is mine.
You know the saying. We are meant to learn from our mistakes, incorporate the lessons into our lives and be sure to apply them when the situation arises again. That’s the basics that our fathers have worked hard to teach us, and their fathers before them.
We are meant to make mistakes, but in repeating that error, we become fools. We become stupid for allowing the same mistakes happen to us. We allowed ourselves taken for a jolly costly ride, whose end leaves us feeling empty, stupid, and lacking in logical reasoning.
That’s why Wizkid can never get Nigerians excited when he teases new material. The singer has fooled us all long enough to make us all look the other way when he makes promises. And that’s because from 2015 to date, Wizkid’s story has been one of false announcements, unkept promises, and failed attempts at releasing something truly great.
In that time, he hooked up with Drake and got the ride of his life on the single ‘One Dance’, which was off the “Views” album. And that jolly good ride made him become the hottest property on the continent, and pushed him into the arms of Sony Music, who were waiting for him with a big fat deal, and plenty of money.
That’s great.
But 2016 has been a good one for the singer. He pushed into the New Year with the ‘Daddy Yo’ single and had one of his best collaboration with Drake leaked. The video for that has been shot, and it’s ready drop.
Wizkid’s deal with RCA Records has been signed and sealed. Insider sources say that the man would have to come through with an album in July, and everything is being accelerated to meet that date. Prior to that, Wizkid had promised a glut of projects. 4 mixtapes and an album are expected from the man.
Wizkid and executives of RCA Records
And now he is teasing a new date: 1-4-17.
On Saturday, April 1, 2017, Wizkid expects the world to expect a new project. He is pretty certain that something is definitely coming, and he has tweeted it twice. No one knows what will come down from Wizkid’s throne, into the arms of his people. But the guesses have been many.
A new mixtape? An album? The new song with Drake? No one knows. But what is certain is that Wizkid feels that what he has coming is big, and he is itching for us to feel the weight too, and get excited.
We are not. We never will. Because, we have been fooled before…

Good Nigerian musicians are not exactly good people

Burna BoyGood Nigerian musicians are not exactly good people

We need to learn to separate an artist from their art. We need to split the man from his work.
The society is a funny lace, where we expect too much from people. From hoping that people will treat you in the same courteous way in which you deal with them, to trusting strangers, we expect to always find good in people.
This expectations are mostly unfounded. Nigeria is a hard place. And every time we reach out and expect to find the goodness in people, we are disappointed again and again, because people are fallible, and they lack honour.
People aren’t inherently good people. Remember that guy that broke your heart? Or the dude who you gave the world, and he still stole from you? How about that friend whose hobbies include backstabbing, and spreading false tales about you and all that is yours?
You see? That’s on a personal level.
Where Nigerians fail to find someone to match our daily expectations of people in their private lives, they skip that, and channel the weight of that on to the musicians. Artists primarily make and sell music to people. But the celebrity culture of Nigeria and the world at large requires that they commoditize more than that. They package and sell their entire lives; body, soul, the human spirit, hopes and dreams.
It is a hard process selling the intangible and essential parts of yourself to millions of people. People project all of their hopes and dreams to you. They place the weight of their expectations on your shoulders, and you are forced to lose the freedoms that allows you to make errors and mistakes.
Nigerians expect musicians to be good people. They desire you to be worthy of emulation, with a glowing exemplary character to match the great music that you provide. Your good music has to be matched with good behavior. And tit is this expectation that makes them engage you on social media and pile on this pressure.
These expectations force you to employ businesses to make you look good. It doesn’t matter whether you are a closet masturbator, or you love nudity. Your image has to be spotless. That’s why PR experts exists. That’s why there are billion dollar firms to handle this.
But a great artist isn’t necessarily a good person. We make the mistake of conflating the artist and their works, and it shouldn’t be. Artists are fallible humans, with the same behavioural patterns and tendencies that exist in the same society as the fans.
They were normal people like just like the fans, who do a good job that affects millions of people. They are not blessed with extra-behioural talent. It’s just the song. With this knowledge, you will understand that these artists will inevitably come short of your expectations.
That’s the basis for most of the controversies and scandals. The celebrities are simply living out their fallibilities when they flounder and are embroiled in controversy. If a regular Joe fathers a child outside marriage, you would wave it off. But if that person is Wizkid, all hell would let loose.
Burna boy-Underrated club tour
Only few acts are forgiven for being shitty people. And artists can get there after building a strog emotional connection to their fans via impeccable music. Take Burna Boy, who is rude, Davido, who has had his fair share of fights, and Wizkid, who brought Linda Ikeji to tears. They are normal, but they are readily forgiven for their normalcy by their fans.
We need to learn to separate an artist from their art. We need to split the man from his work. Only then can we accept that normal vessels produce great art, and good music, can come from bad people.

Skales and Wizkid were on once label mates signed to singer Banky W's record label Empire Mates Entertainment.
The photo above captures the singers in a Surulere studio, on their way up, ironing it out with the music.
At EME, Skales and Wizkid recorded collaborative songs out of the EME's 2012 compilation album such as 'Baddest boy' which also had Banky W on the record, and 'Get down tonight' also featuring Banky W among others.
The pair later would move on at separate times from EME, Wizkid leaving first in 2014 over contractual fall outs and Skales followed suit later in the same year.
Skales is now signed to Baseline Music and Wizkid is running with his Starboy imprint while also signing a multi-album release deal with Sony Music RCA.

Davido 'They tried to change my sound,' singer says about Sony Music

Davido 'They tried to change my sound,' singer says about Sony Music

Davido uses Omarion as case study to prove his point that staying original beats anything else.

Davido who currently has the biggest song in the country in 'IF' talks about the song being a success.

The pop singer also comes out to reveal how the guys at Sony Music tried to change his sound and make him see that he wouldn't catch the attention of the Western world with his African sound.
But Davido pleaded with them, believing that music is universal and the foreigners surely will warm up to his sound. He also uses American R&B Pop singer Omarion to prove his point, as he shares a video of the 'Post to be' crooner grooving to his song 'IF' on Instagram.
" The bro omarion feeling da 'IF' vibes! All last year , they tried to change my sound .. saying staying true to my culture wouldn't work for me outside Africa! This year I fought and pleaded for 'them' to allow me make the music I know how to make and now see what's happened!! MUSIC AINT GOT A LANGUAGE !! NOW I GOT THE BIGGEST SONG IN AFRICA ONCE AGAIN! THANK TO JAH!!,"  Davido writes enthusiastically on his page.
'IF' is currently topping music charts across Nigeria but one could still say Sony is right, and Omarion vibing to the singer's 'IF' is not enough to justify his stance on the issue of re-tuning his sound for his music to penetrate outside Africa. Wizkid may well just be a case in hand.
The equally Sony Music signed up singer since the past year has been embracing other sounds outside the Afrobeat genre, as you would see in his recent catalog of songs - Caribbean vibes has been a major element in his music - 'Wine to the top' with Jamaican singer Vybz Kartel is one song that speaks volume of this.
Davido will have to prove beyond reasonable doubt to Sony that staying true to his cultural influences would be the best strategy for his music being accepted both within and outside African shores especially.
